Is the eternal law of ‘karma’ applicable to atheists? Many of us still think that only those who believe in God are destined to pass through the phases of bitter experiments which believers fondly call ‘karma falam’ (price of one’s deeds). But, the events that led the CPI to the present quandary are forcing a rethinking on that theory. The blow and its timing clearly underline that every Chandrappan has to pass through the Karmic course.

The self-appointed torchbearer of political honesty, integrity and Communist ideals - the CPI - is now searching for a thick red blanket to hide under. Revenue Department, the party’s prestigious asset in the Left government and the Joint Council, a collective of ‘honest’ government employees, have both come under scathing attack from the public; that too, after getting caught in a controversy so far unheard in the history of Kerala. Young and vibrant comrades of the Joint Council, allegedly with the blessings of its veteran leaders, had proved that they could fix a secret government deal smarter than Niira Radia.

PSC jobs, which till last week had remained as a sacred option for young job seekers in the state, are now on a par with the jobs in cooperative societies. As days pass by, more heads are rolling and surprisingly by one way or the other, each of them is related to the CPI. But, Revenue Minister and CPI leader K P Rajendran is unmoved. He feels that there is no need for him to quit. He is not in a mood to revamp the department by weeding out all unwanted elements. For him and his party, the need of the hour is an eye-wash.  They did it perfectly well by punishing those in the Wayanad collectorate where all these malpractices originated. The Minister, however, is reluctant to touch those bureaucrats in Thiruvananthapuram who presided over all these malpractices.

Another interesting aspect of this controversy is how easily comrade C K Chandrappan forgot what M N Govindan Nair and T V Thomas did when such allegations had come up.  He was well aware of that till this issue started off. The articulate leader who cleverly used MN and TV to trap his CPM counterpart some days ago had to swallow all those big talk.  The grapevine is that Chandrappan was like a tamed cat in the LDF meeting last week. Even when Pinarayi Vijayan clearly hinted his displeasure over Chandrappan’s arguments on Lavalin, he remained silent. Had he opened his mouth, Rajendran Minister would have felt the heat.

In this age of Kali, one needs to fear such setbacks. The fruits of one’s Karma are delivered through speed post or express mail service nowadays.

When Chandrappan challenged Pinarayi, he never thought that a more poisonous snake was waiting to come out of his own house.  Now, he and his party are paying the price for that. This Karmic cycle will only be complete when Chandrappan say that his party would deal with the ‘job scam’ politically and legally. Wait for that day.
