KOZHIKODE: Justice V Balakrishna Eradi, former Supreme Court Judge, died at a private hospital, here on Thursday morning.

He was 88. He was admitted to the hospital last week following illness.

He is survived by wife Saraswathi Eradi and daughter Sathi Menon.

The cremation was held at Puthiyapalam in the afternoon.

Born in 1922 to C Krishnan Moosad and P Kunhimalu, Eradi had his education at Zamorin’s School and Guruvayurappan College. He passed MA in Sanskrit from Madras Christian College with first rank. Later he did his BL from Madras Law College with first class and first rank.

He started his career as the junior of K Kuttikrishna Menon at the Madras High Court. Later he shifted to Kerala High Court in 1956.

He was appointed additional judge in 1967. He was elevated as Kerala High Court Chief Justice in 1980 and Judge at the Supreme Court in 1981.

Justice Eradi was appointed chairman of the National Consumer Complaints Redressal Council in 1988. He continued in the post till 1997. He was also the chairman of the tribunal which handled the row over sharing the river water between Haryana and Punjab.

He was also the chairman of the National Company Law Tribunal and Appellate Tribunal.

Justice Eradi was active in many fields outside the law. He was active in the Malayalam radio broadcasting in Madras.

He was the president of International Kathakali Centre in Delhi and Swaralaya. He was also the member of management council of Sathya Sai Central Trust. Justice Eradi was a source of inspiration for many cultural organisations when he was leading retired life at his house in Chalapuram in Kozhikode.
