KOZHIKODE: CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan on Monday defended Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan’s statement on the Popular Front of India (PFI), saying that the Chief Minister’s remarks were against the extremist outfit and not against the Muslim communtiy in general.

Addressing the family meet organised by the NGO Union here on Monday, he said Achuthanandan made the statement based on certain information he accessed. “The Muslim community should not be used as a cover to protect the extremist outfit,” he said, and added that the UDF’s attempt to portray the CPM as an anti-minority front would be defeated.

Organisations like the PFI and the SDPI do not represent the Muslim community. They grew along the lines of the RSS. Pinarayi cautioned the elders in the Muslim community against the designs of the PFI to convert places of worship into godowns of weapons.

“The elders in the community are duped by the PFI cadre by showing active interest in the activities of mosques. Innocent people will think that boys taking interest in matters of religion is a positive sign. The real agenda of these youths is to take control of mosques,’’ he said. He reiterated the CPM charge that it was the IUML that protected the NDF and the PFI.

“It is through the League that the NDF gained control over the UDF. The SDPI is now acting like a constituent of the UDF,’’ he said.
