KOZHIKODE: Her fascination for colours of the world started from her childhood as she used to follow  butterflies on her way to school. And her paintings reflect the colours that she found on those butterflies.

Veena Saboo, whose paintings have been displayed at the S K Pottekat Art Gallery, transmits the impressions of the colourful world into the hearts of the connoisseurs through her works of art.

“I used to follow butterflies to get a glimpse of their colours. Later I started collecting butterflies and moths just for a craze. It may be because of that fascination most of my paintings have the presence of butterflies,” says Veena.

Born in Rajasthan with no formal lessons in painting, Veena Saboo started painting during her school days. “I had drawn almost 35 paintings for the exhibition. But I chose 25 among those to display at the event,” she said. Though most of the exhibits are water colour paintings, Veena has tried her hand in oil and acrylic. She has also made an attempt in Madhubani painting.

The essence of the  North Indian lifestyle has been captured by the artist in her paintings at the exhibition. “It was the Rajasthani deserts and the women of North India that inspired me to draw. Other than the butterflies, what I love are the colours of the desert,” says Veena.

Her tastes are evident from the paintings that have been showcased at the exhibition. Though the Radhakrishna paintings may seem reproductions of paintings on the same theme, a close look into the paintings will show that there is a mix of various styles ebbed into the strokes. “I like working with strong colours. Dull colours do not excite eyes. Like the Krishna painting. I chose red to highlight the dull brownish tints of Krishna,” says Veena.

“I would love to open myself to the various modern styles  in the contemporary art world. But I would not draw abstract paintings which are not enjoyable to all. Art has to be understood and enjoyed by all without any bias,” says Veena. Her exhibition will be open for the public at the S K Pottekat Art Gallery till October 10.
