After pampering the palate of prisoners, jail authorities have also suggested the introduction of a separate dress code for senior prisoners to enhance discipline. Presently, the dress code for prisoners is white shirt and mundu as per the prison rule of 1958.
It is reliably understood that the proposal is to provide an emblem or name board on the white shirt of ‘mesthiris’ - the popular name of senior prisoners - those who have put in five years or more.
This, apparently, is being mooted so that officials can easily identify the senior prisoners who, more often than not, have been identified as trigger for trouble in prison. The other proposals include installing body scanner at the main gate of every jail to keep track of smuggled articles such as ganja, contraband drugs in ampoules and mobile phones.
