The fourth Laadli Media Awards 2011-12 were presented at a glittering function here on Saturday.

Presenting the awards, Speaker G Karthikeyan said writers and journalists have a major role in the betterment of women. ‘’The fact that women suffer due to various social evils is a shame and should be stopped at the earliest. Personalities in the media, art and cultural fields should work for creating awareness on gender sensitivity,’’ he said.

Population First executive trustee S V Sista said the Laadli Media Awards intended to encourage mediapersons who deal with gender-related issues.

Malayalam film director T V Chandran was presented with the lifetime achievement award. Sangeetha Neeraja of The New Indian Express, Tamil Nadu, won the award for the best feature in English. ‘’In her features on LGBTs and pavement dwellers, she presented their issues without glorifying their victimhood,’’ the jury observed.
