No monetary gain for Pinarayi in Lavalin case: CBI

Express News Service

The Central Bureau of Investigation probing into the SNC-Lavalin corruption case on Monday told the CBI special court that CPM state secretary Pinarayi Vijayan had not made any monetary benefit from the deal with SNC-Lavalin Company.

The agency also gave a clean chit to former Electricity Minister and present  Assembly Speaker G Karthikeyan. Stating that unnecessary interim petitions were being filed in sensational cases,  the agency told the court that this only led to the delay in starting the trial in the case.

Arguing before the court, the CBI also raised suspicion on the genuineness of Deepak Kumar, one of the key witnesses in the case. Kumar, a Chennai-based entrepreneur, had claimed that he was witness to several financial transactions between middlemen of the company and Pinarayi.

The agency said that the petitioners would time and again come up with false witnesses whenever they did not get a favourable ruling from the court.
