Malayalam study centres will be set up in major cities outside the state, to help Keralites learn the language, said K C Joseph, Minister for Rural Development, Planning & Culture. The government is also exploring the possibilities of converting the Kunchan memorial centre in Killikurishimangalam into a research centre under the Malayalam University, he said.
Consultations will be held with the university authorities and a final decision will be taken by the next anniversary. The minister was speaking after inaugurating the Kunchan day celeberations at the Kalakkath Bhavan, here on Sunday.
The Archeology Department has been approached with a request to restore the homestead of Kunchan Nambiar without losing the heritage value. The Director of Archeology will visit the Kunchan Nambiar memorial centre on May 8 and submit a report in this regard, the minister said.
Malayalam has been recognized as the first language by the State Government and also made compulsory. The sub committee of the Kendra Sahithya Academy has accepted the recommendation of the Government to declare Malayalam as classical language. Now the issue is under the consideration of the Central Government.
