Police have arrested five persons in connection with the attack on Swami Sandeepananda Giri.

Kavancheri native Unnikrishnan, 41, Kunjani Padikkal Vasu, 48, Vettam native Kandakkattil Rajesh, 35, B P Angadi native Kambad Ranjith, 23, and Tanur Kanjilasseri Venugopal, 25, are the arrested in connection with the attack.

Sandeepananda was attacked on Tuesday evening during his spiritual discourse at Thunjanparamba. He was admitted to a private hospital and discharged by Wednesday noon.  Sandeepananda’s remarks about Mat Amritanandamayi during a speech led to the attack, it is learnt.

Sandeepananda had challenged Amritanandamayi Ashram for a spiritual debate.

He said an ideology should be defended with another ideology, not with physical violence.

“I have worked in SFI and DYFI. Sree Krishna was a perfect Communist and Bhagavat Gita has Communist ideologies. I have forgiven the attackers. I have asked not to take case on the issue. But the police filed a case on  their own,” Sandeepananda said.
