Fr Thomas Kocherry Passes Away

Fr Thomas Kocherry who was at the forefront of many agitations of the fishermen community, died here after a heart attack. He was 73.

The funeral will be held at Holy Cross Church, Muttada, here on Monday at 3 pm.

Kocherry who hailed from Parepally in Changanassery, was a graduate in Science and Law.  He became a priest in 1971.  Kocherry was the former chairman of the National Fishworkers Forum and was also at the helm of the National Alliance of People’s Movements.

His efforts in launching a World Forum of Fisherpeople earned him the ‘Earth Trustee’ award of the United Nations.  ‘’Kocherry, who had spearheaded many agitations for the fishermen community, was active even in the recent protests against the Koodankulam nuclear power plant,” said T Peter, secretary, National Fishworkers Forum.

 He is survived by four sisters and three brothers. Three of his brothers had pre-deceased him.
