Express News Service

KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Thursday directed the State Police to ensure that proper police escort is provided to women prisoners while producing them before the court.

Justice P Ubaid passed the order on a petition filed by Geethakumari, who is in judicial custody at the Viyyur Central Jail, seeking a directive to produce her before the Kollam Judicial Magistrate Court, in a case registered at the Eravipuram police station.

The Thrissur SP submitted before the court that there was a government circular in 2012, stating that police personnel should accompany the prisoners while being produced before the court.

He further stated that there was a shortage of women police officers in the force, and  that they were not able to provide adequate protection and security to women prisoners.
