Retail Shops to Sell 'Malabar Meat'

Express News Service

KALPETTA:The Sulthan Bathery-based Brahmagiri Development Society (BDS) would enter the meat market in Kozhikode by opening as many as 10 outlets across the district by the end of this month. The retail shops would sell beef, mutton, rabbit, and poultry products under the brand name ‘Malabar Meat’, processed at the multi-species meat processing plant maintained by BDS.

It’s an accredited agency of departments of Dairy Development, Animal Husbandry, NABARD, Khadi and Village Industries Commission, Western Ghat Cell, and State Planning Board. “As many as 10 retail shops would be opened across Kozhikode in the initial phase. In view of the festival season, we are selling chicken at a discounted rate of Rs 145 per kg, which is about Rs 30-35 lesser than the price in the open market,” said Project Manager Anu Scaria.

The Society would open two more outlets in Wayanad, in Kambalakkad and Ambalavayal, by mid-April. The 15th retail shop of ‘Malabar Meat’ in the district was opened at Old Vythiri the other day. Vythiri panchayat president P Gagarin inaugurated the shop. At present, there are 16 outlets -- 15 in Wayanad and one in Panoor in Kannur -- under BDS.

The processed meat, both chilled and frozen, is available in three weight classes ranging from half kg to two kgs.

The price of one kg of beef is tentatively fixed at Rs 210, while mutton and chicken are being sold at Rs 400 and Rs 145, respectively.
