KOCHI: Call it ‘rarest of rare’. The 1979-82 batch of LLB at the Government Law College, Ernakulam, has the rare honour of having six of their classmates as judges in the Kerala High Court, serving at the same time. Perhaps, it could be the first such instance in the whole world.   With B Sudheendrakumar swearing in as a judge on Friday, the number of classmates in the Bench rose to six.

Justice  V K Mohanan, P R Ramachandra Menon, Justice C K Abdul Rahim, Justice A M Shafique and Justice P V Asha are the other classmates who have already been serving as judges.

It was Justice V K Mohanan who became the first Judge from the 1979-82 batch, followed by Justice C K Abdul Rahim and Justice P R Ramachandra Menon.

Later, Justice A M Shaffique joined them. Justice P V Asha, the lone female, was sworn in as Judge on May 21, 2014.

Apart from contributing six judges to the Kerala High Court, the 1979-82 batch has other reasons to boast of being unique. The batch also has three district judges, a Member of Parliament, one former MLA, an Additional Director General of Prosecution, two IAS officers, one Principal of the Government Law College, three Central Excise Superintendents, two senior divisional managers in insurance companies and two senior advocates  at the High Court.

The classmates are set to meet at the a get-together being organised in connection with the retirement of  Louly James, principal of the Government Law College who is also a member of the same batch.
