Basheer's Satirical Novel to Come Alive on Stage

 ALAPPUZHA: The Kerala Peoples Arts Club, popularly known as KPAC, would soon bring on stage ‘Ntuppuppakkoranendarnnu’ (My Grandpa Had an Elephant), a celebrated short novel by Vaikom Mohammed Basheer.

The final rehearsal of the play, to be staged in Kozhikode on Tuesday, was held at KPAC Theatre at Kayamkulam near here on Saturday. The novel written by Basheer in 1951. KPAC Secretary A Shajahan said the play attempts to find linkages between the social issues of the 1950s and the times we live in. “Basheer tried to show us the hollowness and vanity in the heart of humans. It was also a strong critique of orthodox values in Muslim community. We have tried to do justice to the author’s vision while adapting the play,” Shajahan said.

The adaptation of the play, directed by Manoj Narayanan, has been done by Sureshbabu Sreestha. The music has been scored by Arjunan Master and background music is by Udayakumar.

The novelist Vaikkom Mohammed Basheer would himself appear as a character in the play which will see 15 artists playing various roles.

In the novel, a beautiful and wealthy Kunjithachu marries Vattan Adima, but they lose their house and property in a civil dispute. Later they live in a rented house and Kunjipathumma, their daughter, falls in love with Nizar Ahammed.
