Mar Philexinos Passes Away

KALPETTA: Former bishop of Jacobite Syrian Church, Dr Yuhanon Mar Philexinos Metropolitan, 74, passed away in Kalpetta on Wednesday morning.

He died following common geriatric ailments.

Mar Philexinos retired as diocese head of the Jacobite Church in Malabar region, and was leading a retired life at Mar Ignatius Nagar in Meenangadi. The body was taken to his native place in Kottayam.

He became the Metropolitan of Malabar in 1985 following the death Samuel Mar Philexinos, and was in charge of the Malankara Metropolitan Trust since 1998. Mar Philexinos was born to Elapinal Kuruvila Chacko and Annamma in 1941 at Pampady in Kottayam.

He was ordrained as deacon in 1964 after he finished his initiation phase in Orthodox Theological Seminary in Kottayam.

He took his post-graduate degree in Economics from Sri Venkateswara University, Tirupati, and ThD (Doctor in Theology) from Logos Graduate College of Theology, New York.

The Metropolitan was active in establishing Mor Elias Snehabhavan Orphanage, St Peter’s & St Paul’s Higher Secondary School, Karuna Bhavan (old-age home) and St Gregorios BEd college in Meenangadi.
