THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Kerala Sahitya Akademi M P Appan Award has gone to V Madhusoodanan Nair. The award honours the poet’s work titled ‘Achchan Piranna Veedu’.  According to the jury, Madhusoodanan Nair’s ‘Naranathu Bhranthan’ is a modern classic.

‘Achchan Piranna Veedu’ is yet another result of a creative effort which has striven to retain the music of poetry, said the jury chaired by O N V Kurup with P Venugopalan and P K Rajasekharan as members.

The jury said that while a movement of poetry helped Malayalam poetry leave behind an era characterised by melodramatic narratives and music, poetry started sounding dry without the music. They said that Madhusoodanan Nair was the representative of yet another style which kept the melody of poetry intact and helped make poetry popular. They said it was a unanimous decision to bestow the award on the poet.  The award includes a medal, citation and a purse of `50,000.

It will be presented to Madhusoodanan Nair in the third week of May at Kanakakkunnu Palace here.  On the 102nd birth anniversary of M P Appan which falls on March 31, Kerala  Sahithya Akademi will conduct a ‘Smruthi Pooja’ in his memory.
