KOTTAYAM/IDUKKI: In two separate ragging cases reported from Kottayam and Idukki districts, two students were admitted to hospital with injuries.

While a 17-year-old first year polytechnic student hailing from Ernakulam sustained injuries in gruesome physical torture at Government Polytechnic Institute, Nattakom in Kottayam, Gokul C Ashtaman, 20, a third semester Electrical Engineering student was brutally beaten up by his seniors at Mahatma Gandhi University College of Engineering (UCET) in Muttam, near Thodupuzha, on Thursday.

Based on a complaint filed by the polytechnic student’s parents, Chingavanam police registered a case against seven senior students. Meanwhile, college authorities suspended all the seven accused students from the college. According to the police, the ragging incident took place on December 2 at the boys hotel of the institute.

The victim was undressed by the accused and asked to take 60 push-ups and 100 sit-ups at a stretch. Moreover, he was forced to be under the bathroom shower for many hours, said police. Physically worn out following the torture, the boy went to his house the following day and was admitted to General Hospital, Ernakulam. His parents later lodged a complaint at Cheranalloor police station and the police passed the complaint to Chingavanam police. The police took the statement of the victim and parents on Thursday.

In the second incident, Gokul had been allegedly harassed by the senior students since he joined UCET. Based on Gokul’s grievance regarding harassment, his mother, Bindu on Thursday came to the college seeking possibilities of transferring her son to any other college. According to her, while she went to the administrative section of the college, asking Gokul to wait outside the campus, a few students came and beat him up.

Following this, Bindu and Gokul submitted a complaint to the college principal and got Gokul admitted to District Hospital, Thodupuzha. They later made a complaint to the Thodupuzha CI over phone and the police took the statement of the victim.
