THIRUVANANTHAPURAM:  In the wake of the prevailing heat wave condition, no schools in Thiruvananthapuram district should conduct classes till May 20, District Collector Biju Prabhakar has ordered. The order comes in the wake of a series of reports in 'Express' highlighting the plight of high school students who have been forced to attend classes during their summer vacation.

Experts, including child psychologists, have warned about the adverse mental and physical impact that classes during harsh summer can have on students. The District Collector's order is applicable to government as well as private schools.

"Strict action will be taken against schools which flout the order," the District Collector said adding that the order was not applicable for exams. However, the District Collector has said the order could be reviewed in case climatic conditions improve.
