THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: A Cabinet sub-committee is actively considering a recommendation to grant aided status to 33 special schools that have more than 100 students on the rolls, Education Minister C Raveendranath told the Assembly on Friday. The minister was responding to a submission by V T Balram of the Congress. According to the minister, the sub-committee was studying the financial implication of the proposal and the need to frame special rules for the purpose.

There were around 400 registered schools that impart education to children with special needs. Out of these registered institutions, one is a government school and 65 are BUDS schools. The Centre and the state governments provide grants for such schools. Though the state government provides grant on an annual basis, the Centre has not provided its share for the past two years, Raveendranath said.

After the LDF Government assumed power, around 20,000 work books have been distributed to children and over 1,500 handbooks to teachers at a cost of Rs 1 crore through a project by the State Council of Educational research and Training (SCERT), he said.
