ALAPPUZHA:  The Kerala State Human Rights Commission (KSHRC) has accused of bureaucrats of worsening the misery of people affected by cyclone Ockhi. Speaking at the Human Rights Day celebrations at S D college auditorium here on Sunday, P Mohandas, acting chairman of KSHRC said the bodies of people are being washed ashore like dead fishes. “It was bureaucratic failure. They breached people’s right to live. There is no point in accusing either the state or the Ministers for the situation,” he said.

Kerala High court acting Chief Justice Antony Dominic inaugurated the programme. “The HC will give direction to the judicial academies to train district judges for handling cases related to human rights,” he said. “The human rights violations in Kerala are comparatively less than other states. The intervention of KSHRC and political awareness are the reason for it.”

Public Works Minister G Sudhakran who delivered the keynote address said, “The judiciary has a role in protecting human rights. The law related to human rights should be modified with the help of legislature,” the Minister said.

KSHRC former chairman R Natarajan, Kerala Legislature secretary V K Babu, KSHRC member K Mohankumar, district Principal Sessions Judge K M Balachandran, Chief Judicial Magistrate Mohan Das, KSHRC secretary M H Muhammed Rafi and S D College principal S Nataraja Ayyar spoke on the occasion.
