KOCHI: The Kerala High Court on Monday granted interim bail to former Kerala police chief T P Senkumar, an accused in a case pertaining to the controversial remarks allegedly promoting enmity between different religions.
After his retirement on June 30, Senkumar in an interview to 'Samakalika Malayalam', the sister publication of the New Indian Express, made controversial remarks against the Muslim community. He said the Muslim community accounted for 42 per cent of the childbirths in Kerala whereas their population was 27 per cent, indicating that in future the state's demography will be altered if the present trend continues.
The Kerala police had registered a case against him under section 153 (A) (1) (a) of IPC on the charges of creating rift among different communities.
In his plea, Senkumar submitted that he never breached any provisions of IPC including section 153 (A). "Due to differences of opinion between me and some of the high ranking police officers while I was in service, an attempt was made to humiliate me," Senkumar submitted.
According to him, the allegation was absolutely baseless. Senkumar said he was apprehending arrest in the case hence filed the anticipatory bail petition.
