KOCHI: The absence of proper government policies is crippling the growth of the renewable energy sector in Kerala, according to the office-bearers of the Kerala Renewable Energy Entrepreneurs and Promoters Association (KREEPA).
KREEPA’s second edition of Green Power Expo began from Tuesday at Bolgatty Palace and Island Resort here. The event will be on till Thursday.
Jose Kallookaran, secretary of KREEPA, said the government should come up with policies facilitating the growth of renewable energy sector in the state. “While other states are making strides in the renewable energy sector, especially in solar power production, Kerala has been lagging behind. Many states have generated more than 500 megawatts of power from renewable energy sources. However, till now, Kerala could produce only around 70 megawatts of power from green sources.
This is despite the fact Kerala is one of most potential states in India as far as adopting renewable energy is concerned. Favourable policies and their implementation will enable growth in the sector,” he said.
Though the solar scam had its effect on the industry initially, the public have now started preferring authentic companies. “When the solar scam made headlines, it had an adverse effect on the industry.
However, the sector has now tided over the crisis. In fact, the solar scam could flush out fake companies operating in the sector,” he said.
KREEPA executive member Sunil Ramakrishna Nambiar said the subsidies provided by the Central and state governments will not achieve the desired results when it comes to promoting renewable energy in Kerala.
“Several policies exist like compulsory installation of solar power plant in residences. However, such policies never get implemented. Usually, the procedures to avail of the government subsidies take a long time. So, instead of granting subsidies, the government should draft a proper policy promoting renewable energy in Kerala,” he said.
The Green Power Expo is the first Carbon Neutral event in the country. The event is being organised by adhering to all norms under the Green Protocol.
