THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: The Admission Supervisory Committee had cancelled 180 admissions as the colleges did not comply with its directions that were aimed at ensuring equity and excellence in professional education.

Though the colleges moved the court, the High Court and the Supreme Court upheld the committee’s decision. With the fate of the students hanging in the balance, the government decided to frame the legislation to regularise the admissions.

The government said students with a NEET rank lower than those admitted to the two colleges were pursuing education in other colleges.Chennithala justified the UDF support for the bill saying the sole consideration was students’ welfare.

“It’s not to aid the managements or vested interests,’’ he said, adding there was no meaning in the allegations to the contrary or the media discussions on this issue.
