ALUVA: Sending a tough message to government officers involved in corruption and siphoning off public money, the Muvattupuzha Vigilance Court on Tuesday convicted a Revenue inspector and sentenced him to four years of rigorous imprisonment.

O Abdul Latheef of Karikkal Parambu House, Thiruvambady, Alappuzha was also asked to pay a fine of Rs 20,000 by Judge Kalaam Basha.

Latheef was the former Revenue inspector of Aluva municipality when the Vigilance and Anti-Corruption Bureau (VACB) booked him for misappropriating Rs 87,926 collected as tax from people.  As per VACB, Latheef committed the fraud while serving as Revenue inspector between February and June, 2001.

An official team led by former DySPs P U Joseph and C S Najeeb of the Ernakulam Vigilance unit probed the case and filed the chargesheet against Latheef.
