Kerala to declare 25 spots as ‘Green Tourism Destinations’

The project is part of ‘Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam’ — the campaign that aims to make Kerala a garbage-free state by March 30, 2025.

THIRUVANANTHAPURAM: Kerala is all set to declare 25 prominent tourist spots in the state as ‘Green Tourism Destinations’.

The initiative aims at transforming tourist centres into green destinations that promote sustainable waste management practices, hygiene, cleanliness and environmental conservation.

The project is part of ‘Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam’ the campaign that aims to make Kerala a garbage-free state by March 30, 2025.

The official declaration of the ‘Green Tourism Destinations’ will be made on October 2, along with the official launch of ‘Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam’ campaign.

Kite Beach Park in Kasaragod, Iritty Eco Park and Chal Beach in Kannur, Lokanarkavu temple in Kozhikode, Nilambur Teak Museum in Malappuram, Mangalam Dam Park and Kanjirapuzha dam in Palakkad, Peechi dam, Hill View Park and Malankara dam in Idukki, Konni Eco Tourism- Elephant Shelter in Pathanamthitta, Adichanalloor Chira Park and Meenmutti in Kollam, Alappuzha beach, Thenmala Eco Adventure Park, Ponmudi, Ponnumthuruthu and Sasthampara in Thiruvananthapuram are among the destinations selected to be declared as ‘Green Tourism Destinations’. 

‘Cleanliness among top priorities’

LSG Minister M B Rajesh told TNIE that keeping tourism destinations clean and attractive is one of the key priorities of the government and Malinya Muktham Nava Keralam also gives major focus on tourism centres.

“Maintaining good hygiene and cleanliness is a must for tourism industry to attract tourists. We have tied up with tourism and forest departments and launched efforts to introduce sustainable waste management practices. We aim to transform all major tourism destinations into ‘Green Tourism Destinations’ by March 2025,” he said.
