KOZHIKODE: Nestled in the hill-influenced regions of Kozhikode district, Perambra is a constituency that has been shaped by farmer-led struggles, echoes of the national movement, and decades of intense ideological battles.

For over four decades, since 1980, Perambra has remained a Left bastion, with the CPM-led LDF treating it as one of its most secure seats. Yet, beneath this political continuity, recent electoral outcomes in the local body election indicate shifting undercurrents.

The UDF has drawn significant confidence from its recent performances in the region. In the 2024 parliamentary election, Shafi Parambil registered a lead of 19,085 votes within the segment. In the subsequent local body elections too, the UDF secured six of 10 panchayats in the constituency and won the Perambra block panchayat after decades of Left dominance.

The LDF, however, remains far from conceding ground. It has fielded former minister and incumbent MLA T P Ramakrishnan, who is contesting for the fourth time.

“Perambra’s development trajectory over the years is evident across sectors. People understand the importance of continuity in governance,” he said.

In contrast, the UDF has chosen to project generational change by fielding Fathima Thahiliya, a young and emerging leader from the IUML. Having risen through the ranks of the MSF, and later serving as a councillor in Kozhikode corporation, she represents a new political voice in the constituency.

Her candidature is especially significant, as she is among the very few women candidates fielded by the IUML. “This election is about representation, choice, and ensuring that women and young people have a stronger voice in public life.” she said.

The NDA has nominated M Mohanan, BJP Kozhikode area secretary, as its candidate. Mohanan’s campaign is focused on highlighting gaps in development and administrative upgrades that, according to the NDA, remain unaddressed. “There are several pending demands in Perambra, including key administrative upgrades. Our focus is on what has not been delivered,” he said.
