Cusat wins four patents for breakthroughs in AI, biomedical research and green innovation

The patented method is expected to benefit pharmaceutical companies and researchers by facilitating the discovery of new anticancer compounds that cannot be screened through existing techniques.

KOCHI: A research project that helps identify individual interests and aptitudes, an invention that helps in emerging fields like biomedical research, an environmentally friendly technology to extract high-purity cellulose from banana pseudostem, a new anti-cancer screening method… the list has been growing long of patents awarded to research teams from the Cochin University of Science and Technology (Cusat).

In the past week, the university got four patents. According to the university, Sudheep Elayidom, a professor with the department of computer science, Cusat, and Anupama, a faculty member of the Chinmaya Vishwa Vidyapeeth, were granted a patent for a technology that identifies individuals’ interests and aptitudes using artificial intelligence techniques, enabling them to make informed career choices.

The patent has been awarded for an interdisciplinary research project integrating the fields of psychology, artificial intelligence, computer vision, and the Internet of Things (IoT). The research also includes the design of a classroom monitoring unit that can be deployed in educational institutions in the future.

An Indian Patent was granted to Cusat for the invention titled ‘Process for One Pot Synthesis of Tin Porphyrins’.

“The patented invention represents a significant advancement in the development of a simple, efficient, and environmentally sustainable process for the synthesis of tin porphyrins. These compounds have wide-ranging applications in emerging fields such as photocatalysis, renewable energy conversion, environmental remediation, advanced functional materials, and biomedical research,” Cusat said in a statement.

The process simplifies synthesis, minimises the use of hazardous chemicals, reduces waste generation, and improves overall efficiency, providing a more sustainable and practical approach for the production of these valuable compounds. The innovation is expected to support future research and the development of next-generation materials for energy, environmental and healthcare applications.

That particular research was carried out by Suja Haridas, a professor with Cusat’s department of applied chemistry; Gopika Jagannivasan, a former doctoral research scholar with the department and currently a postdoctoral research fellow with Griffith University, Australia; and Sebastian Nybin Remello, an assistant professor with the department.

The university was also granted an Indian Patent for developing an environment friendly technology to extract high-purity cellulose from banana pseudostem, an abundant agricultural residue. The patent is the outcome of research carried out by Suja P Devipriya, professor and director, and Riya K Alex, a researcher at the School of Environmental Studies, Cusat.

“The process offers a sustainable approach to cellulose production and adds value to agricultural residues that are otherwise discarded. The cellulose produced through this process has potential applications in sustainable packaging, cosmetic and personal care products, and other bio-based industries,” the varsity said.

Another Indian Patent was bagged by Cusat for developing a novel method to evaluate the anticancer activity of nonpolar compounds extracted from green mussels. The research was carried out by N Chandramohanakumar, retired professor, department of chemical oceanography, research scholar Divya K R of the department of chemical oceanography, and research scholar Saipriya T P of the department of biotechnology, the university said.

The patented method is expected to benefit pharmaceutical companies and researchers by facilitating the discovery of new anticancer compounds that cannot be screened through existing techniques. It also simplifies the preliminary screening of natural extracts, paving the way for the development of new treatments against various types of cancer.
