KOCHI: The government will seriously examine the demand to make Muvattupuzha a separate district and will bring in a delimitation commission to consider the matter, Chief Minister V D Satheesan said on Sunday. He was speaking at the Thriveni Onam celebrations organised by the Muvattupuzha municipality.
Saying though he was saddened by the possibility of Muvattupuzha being separated from his own district, Satheesan asserted that the demand would be considered by the delimitation commission and that concerns of the people of Muvattupuzha would be addressed.
Speaking earlier, Muvattupuzha MLA Mathew Kuzhalnadan alleged that the region had been neglected during the 10-year rule of the LDF government and raised the demand for a separate Muvattupuzha district.
Muvattupuzha is currently part of Ernakulam district and is located close to the Idukki district border.

There has been a demand to form a separate Muvattupuzha district by combining areas in the eastern parts of Ernakulam district and low-lying areas of Idukki district.
Maintaining that he had taken note of the grievances raised by the MLA, Satheesan spoke about how the region had been marginalised for a long time and how development activities were halted and blocked out of ‘revenge’.
“I am only saying one sentence. All these grievances and all these worries will be resolved,” the CM said, adding that the development backlog suffered by Muvattupuzha would be compensated “with interest”.
On Onam, the CM said the government had not curtailed celebrations despite financial challenges. He said pending dues were being cleared and funds were being provided to ordinary people and those who had been waiting for payments for months.
He said all Supplyco Onam fairs had been stocked with 13 subsidised essential commodities, which he claimed was unprecedented in recent years. The government had planned the arrangements two months in advance and was making the commodities available at reduced prices after proper packaging, Satheesan said. He also claimed that Supplyco was witnessing record sales in the state.
He said Onam was originally a harvest festival as Kerala was predominantly an agrarian society. He added that Onam was celebrated beyond considerations of caste, religion, class and colour.
