BHUBANESWAR: The Government has decided in principle to grant autonomy to VSS Medical College and Hospital, Burla.

A resolution was passed to this effect in the Assembly on December 19, 2008.

A House committee was set up in 1995 to study the feasibility of granting autonomy to the three Government medical colleges - SCB Medical College and Hospital, Cuttack, MKCG Medical College and Hospital, Berhampur and VSS Medical College and Hospital, Burla - of the State. The Assembly committee recommended functional autonomy to the three premier institutes. Accordingly, a resolution was passed unanimously in the Assembly.

Health and Family Welfare Minister Prasanna Acharya today said that the Government would pilot a Bill in the coming session of the Assembly for granting autonomy to VSS Medical College and Hospital.

A technical management and support team is in the process of preparing a draft bill for elevating the status of the medical college to a unitary university, the Minister said.

Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik had announced granting unitary university status to the Burla medical college during its golden jubilee function.
