ROURKELA: Biting cold returned with a vengeance with Sundargarh town recording the lowest temperature of the season at
4.9 degree Celsius even as mercury elsewhere in the district also dipped sharply.
Sources said Sundargarh town and its adjoining areas are reeling under cold wave with minimum temperature today plummeting to a degree below
Sunday’s temperature of 5.9 C. Rourkela city, about 100 km from Sundargarh town, also saw chilly weather with today’s minimum temperature at 7 degree Celsius.
Sources in the interior areas said some hilly and forested pockets are facing freezing conditions during night but there was no official confirmation.
Meanwhile, due to the prevailing cold conditions across the country, winter garment market is witnessing an upward surge even as old stocks are getting exhausted.
Director of the Bothra Mega Bazaar Pvt Ltd Bikram Bothra said the sale has gained momentum from December 10 and further picked up in the last couple of days. He observed that sale was not very encouraging in the last two seasons and hence most of the stockists did not procure adequate stocks.
