White Paper on Rivers Sought

From our online archive

CUTTACK: Odisha Nadi Surakhya Abhijan has called upon the State Government to enact a special law on river zone regulation not only to protect the rivers but also to check indiscriminate use of water by industries and other sectors.

The fledgling outfit, a consortium of organisations, has also demanded a White Paper on the status of rivers and river-beds and the remedial measures undertaken by the Government to free them from pollution and encroachments.

The organisation has announced that it would launch a movement aimed at protecting the rivers and basins from various onslaughts.   The river beds are falling victim to indiscriminate encroachment but this issue has not been dealt with earnestness.

“The consortium takes the task on itself to launch mass awareness and vigilance against the legislative and executive inertia that has been the root cause for the increasing menace endangering our future,” member advocates BP Tripathy, SB Panda and PM Maharatha said.
