PM arrives in Bhubaneswar

BHUBANESWAR: Prime Minister Manmohan Singh arrived here Monday evening to inaugurate the 99th Indian Science Congress (ISC) Tuesday, an official said.

Odisha Governor M.C. Bhandare, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and leaders of the opposition Congress party received him at the Biju Patnaik Airport here.

The prime minister will spend the night at the Raj Bhavan, the official residence of state governor. He is scheduled to inaugurate the 99th Indian Science Congress (ISC) at the Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology (KIIT) University complex here Tuesday.

He is also expected to visit the Congress office here Tuesday before flying back to Delhi.

Police said all security arrangements are in place.

"We have conducted several meetings and a mock drill was held Sunday," a police officer told IANS.

Hundreds of policemen have been deployed around the venue and at strategic locations of the city.

The January 3-7 Science Congress, the country's largest such event, focuses on the theme 'Science and Technology for Inclusive Innovation-Role of Women'.

Over 15,000 delegates, including 500 foreign scientists and several Nobel laureates, are expected to participate in the five-day event.
