Engineering students held for Highway robberies

JAJPUR: Two engineering students of inter-district robber gang were arrested for looting people at gunpoint on national highway in Cuttack, Jajpur, Khurda and Angul districts. Police seized a revolver, six mobile phones and a four-wheeler from their possession. They were produced in court on Saturday and later remanded to judicial custody after their bail applications were rejected, police said.

The accused have been identified as Guru Abhisek Mohanty alias Raja of Chandabali in Bhadrak and Abhisek Gourab Mohanty alias Bapuni of Grameswar village in Jagatsinghpur district. Both the accused are third year students of Dhabaleswar Engineering College at Khuntuni in Cuttack district.

Police said on January 14, Tapas Nanda, employed with a private company, was robbed by these youths while he was returning home near Kuakhia along with his family around 8 pm. The criminals snatched away three mobile phones, ` 5 lakh cash and jewellery at gunpoint near Chandikhole on NH-5. Nanda had lodged a complaint with Barachana police following which police launched a hunt.

Two of the gang members were caught red-handed by Redhakhole police while robbing a vehicle on the highway in Kisan Nagar in Angul on March 1.

The youths would loot people and flee on their motorcycle. Basing on the registration of the seized bike, Redhakhole police intimated the matter to its counterparts. Barachana police raided Chhatia on Friday and arrested the two.

Jajpur SP Deepak Kumar said two of the gang members were arrested by the Redhakhole police.
