Express News Service

A woman was arrested and the three-month-old baby boy who was stolen from the Bhubaneswar railway station recently was rescued by Niscintakoili police from her possession on Saturday.

The child and the accused woman have been handed over to Government Railway Police, Bhubaneswar.

According to reports, on October 10 night, Saraswati Sahoo of Betasara village in Angul district was sleeping along with her infant near the main entrance of Bhubaneswar railway station when two youths took away the baby and fled.

A case in this regard was filed by the GRP, Bhubaneswar.

On a tip off, Nischintakoili police raided a house at Panasapadia here and rescued the infant from one Santosi Behera.

Police said Santosi and her husband Surendra Behera of Munsipentha village under Chhatrapur block in Ganjam district have been living in a rented house here since long.  The couple had two daughters - Jayanti and Jayashree - but had always wanted a son.  With Santosi remaining depressed over the issue, her brother Mitu Behera, an attendant at the Bhubaneswar railway station, assured her to bring her a baby boy. Apparently, Mitu along with another unidentified person took away the child from Saraswati on October 10 night.

The following day, he called his sister and brother-in-law to Bhubaneswar. “Santosi and Surendra waited near Lingaraj temple the same day and Mitu handed over the child to his sister,” said Inspector of Nischintakoili police station, P K Kanungo.

Surendra and Mitu are absconding.
