Centenary celebrations for Sailabala College

Express News Service

Sailabala Women's College, a premiere higher educational institution of the State, will hold its centenary celebrations on March 30 and 31.

Vice-President of India, Mohammad Hamid Ansari, will inaugurate the year-long celebrations and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik would attend as the guest of honour.

College Principal in-charge Roshnara Begum said seminars on 'Atrocities on Women', a sand art on the theme of ‘Journey of Women Education from Rebati to Sailabala’ and a photo exhibition on 'Utkal Gourava Madhusudan Das' at Madhusmruti - house of Madhu Babu that was converted into a museum a few years ago - will be organised. A souvenir on 'Odia Samman and Madhu Babu' will be released by the Vice-President.

On the other hand, College authorities lamented that although the College has completed 100 years, it is facing teaching vacancies and infrastructure issues. For instance, Mathematics department is functioning without a teacher for several days now after the lone lecturer retired. Hostels facilities are grossly inadequate as compared to the admissions.

Besides, post-graduation facilities are not there for all the subjects and the College is yet to impart education in Commerce stream. At present, there are 2,256 students.
