ASI dies after falling from balcony

Express News Service

An Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) of Mancheswar police station fell from the balcony in third floor of the staff quarters late on Saturday night and died a few hours later.

The ASI, Krushna Chandra Behera, suffered serious back injuries from the fall. He was rushed to Capital Hospital where he succumbed to injuries during the wee hours of Sunday. Behera was recently held by Vigilance sleuths for taking a bribe and had been placed under suspension.

He was staying with his family at the staff quarters located behind the police station. The incident occurred at about 2.20 am.

Mancheswar police said it received a call from the occupants of the ground floor who heard a noise and  then found Behera lying on the ground in a distressed condition.

Inspector In-Charge of Mancheswar police station Bharat Sahoo said the ASI was in his sense when police rushed to the spot.

“He said he did not know how he fell and asked us to take him to the hospital since he was in severe pain,” Sahoo added. Behera had apparently broken his back as well as fractured his leg.

The ASI’s family member could know of the incident when they were informed about it.

Minutes before he fell, 52-year-old Behera had complained to his wife about the heat and humidity and walked out to the balcony to get some fresh air.

He is believed to have sat on the parapet and lost balance only to fall over. Police suspect that he may have dozed off while sitting on the low wall leading to the fatal incident.

Assistant Sub-Inspector Behera is survived by wife, two sons and a daughter. Investigation is on to ascertain the exact cause of the fall.
