A low pressure area, which formed over Bay of Bengal on Tuesday, induced rains over coastal Odisha and gave an extended run to the cooler days in the State even as the south west monsoon showed signs of progress.

Many parts of north Odisha districts such as Bhadrak, Balasore, Kendrapara, Jagatsinghpur, Cuttack, Khurda and Puri received rains on Tuesday evening. Some parts of Jharsuguda and Sundargarh also received showers in the last 24 hours.

The India Meteorological department said a trough extended from the  east Uttar Pradesh to the east central Bay of Bengal across Jharkhand and Odisha along with the cyclonic circulation, which turned into low pressure.

The low pressure, which lay over north Bay of Bengal, is expected to concentrate into a depression during the next 48 hours, the weather office said.

Under its impact, rain and thundershowers are expected to occur at many places over north Odisha and at a few places over South Odisha.

The Met office said heavy rain is also likely to occur at one or two places over Odisha during the next 48 hours.

Fishermen in north coastal Odisha have been advised against venturing into the sea.

The existing conditions have ensured the advance of south-west monsoon into more parts of south-west and the east central Bay of Bengal, remaining parts of  the south-east Bay of Bengal and some parts of west central and north-east Bay of Bengal.

Conditions are also favourable for the further progress of the monsoon into some parts of south-east Arabian Sea, Maldives-Comorin areas and more parts of Bay of Bengal during the next two to three days.

The showers ensured that day temperature dropped markedly over the State.

It remained about two to three degree below the normal temperature. With the cloudy conditions likely to prevail over the next couple of days, the mercury will remain almost at  the normal levels over most places.
