BHUBANESWAR: The demographic profile of India and its messy bio-medical waste management system make the country vulnerable to a rapid transmission if Ebola outbreak is reported, said experts at a conclave here on Saturday.
Symptoms of Ebola were being treated as they appeared but early basic interventions like intravenous fluids and balancing body salts, maintaining
oxygen status and blood pressure and treating other infections increase the chances of survival of the patients, experts from top medical colleges of the State said.
In a densely populated country like India, Ebola outbreak can create a difficult situation, they said.
“India being densely populated and biomedical waste management very poor in most hospitals, chances of person-to-person transmission could be high,” cautioned Prof BN Panda, Head of the Department of Medicine in the Institute of Medical Sciences and Sum Hospital.
No vaccine against Ebola was available though efforts are continuing to find an answer against the infection which is highly contagious, he said at the seminar
on ‘Infections - The continuing challenge to mankind’ organised by Siksha ‘O’ Anusandhan University here.
