SMC Drive against Debris on Roads

Express News Service

SAMBALPUR:The Sambalpur Municipal Corporation (SMC) has recently launched a drive to penalise the residents of the city who dump debris and construction materials on the road resulting in inconvenience for pedestrians and traffic congestion under the provisions of the Odisha Municipal Corporation Act.

Deputy Commissioner of SMC Sudhansu Kumar Bhoi said the Corporation has already penalised seven violators after they were found dumping construction materials on the roads. A fine of Rs 200 was imposed on each of the violators and tracking of the violators would continue, he added. Appealing to people to find a suitable place for dumping construction materials before undertaking construction work to avoid inconvenience to the pedestrians as well as vehicle owners, he said the roads should not be treated as dumping ground of debris.

Bhoi said it has come to BMC’s notice that people constructing houses in narrow lanes of Old Sambalpur, Jagannath Colony, SRIT Colony, Sahajog Nagar, Khetrajpur, Sakhipada and Gopalmal park place concrete mixture machine and construction materials on the roads before laying RCC roofs. “Instead of carrying out the work at night which would cost more, they lay the roof during the day in scant regard to inconvenience to others,” he said.

Apart from common people, the contractors, who carry out repair work of the roads and drains, are also found dumping the construction material along the road.
