Singer Suchitra Passes Away

BHUBANESWAR: Noted singer and Odia teacher Suchitra Mohapatra passed away here on Monday. She was undergoing treatment at a private hospital for a complication in the gall bladder. She was 59.

Mohapatra, who headed the Odia Department in Sailabala Women’s College, belonged to a family of singers from Cuttack.

Suchitra took to singing under the tutelage of her mother and carved a niche for herself among the family of singers which included her sisters Padmalaya, Sangita and Sumitra.

Suchitra rendered her voice to scores of devotional and traditional songs. She was famous for the ‘Bishnu Sahashranama’ which she sang along with Sangita. Apart from being a singer, she was a composer.
