JEYPORE: Villagers of Gaganpur under Jeypore Sadar police limits hacked two brothers to death over a land dispute at Matiguda village in Koraput district on Saturday. The deceased are Hiran Bag and his brother Laxman Bag.  According to reports, Bag family of Nandaguda village had allegedly encroached a piece of land at Matiguda and started plotting the land which was protested by people of neighbouring Gaganpur village.

The villagers claimed that the land belonged to the Revenue Department and Bag family had no right to cultivate or plot the land. Both the parties had informed the district administration and police about the matter. On Saturday, when Bag brothers went to the land, Gaganpur villagers gathered in large number.

They hacked Hiran and Laxman, killing them on the spot. When the news spread, villagers of Nandaguda rushed to the spot and a clash ensued between them and another group of  Gaganpur villagers. Three persons of Nandaguda and one from Gaganpur were injured in the clash and admitted to Jeypore Hospital. Tension ran high in the area following the incident. Police have been deployed in the area to maintain law and order.
