Odisha village goes parched as water supply project turns defunct

BERHAMPUR: Jirabadi, one of the thicklypopulated villages in Jagannathprasad block of Ganjam district, is reeling under acute scarcity of drinking water.

At present, the village, inhabited by around 300 families, depends on only one tube-well to collect water. Women wait in long queues to fetch water. In 1990, a water supply project was set up and three stand posts were constructed in the village.

But after a couple of years, the project failed to supply water and the pump house now remains in a dilapidated condition. Taking advantage of the situation, miscreants succeeded in stealing the pipelines and damaged the stand posts.

Though the villagers apprised the officials concerned of the problem, no action was taken. Later, the matter was brought to the notice of Collector Prem Chandra Choudhary, who reportedly directed the officials of RWSS to renovate the water supply project and supply water through tankers.
