BHUBANESWAR: Surgeons at an eye hospital here have conducted a first of its kind surgery in the State on a patient from Uttar Pradesh by applying Glued IOL technique. The team of doctors at Dr Agarwal’s Eye Hospital conducted the advanced three-stage surgery that included a corneal transplant, vitrectomy and fixing of lens through the innovative procedure.

Patient Pradip Singh (35) from Etwah is set to return to work after restoration of his eye sight. He had lost the vision in his left eye due to an untreated corneal infection, leaving him dependent on one eye for the last one and half years.

Dr Binita Gandhi, who led the surgery team, said Singh’s corneal infection and the resultant corneal ulcer had scarred his cornea severely. He had also developed a complicated cataract making the case a complex one, she said.

“We removed all layers of the scarred cornea and performed a corneal transplantation. The procedure was followed by a vitrectomy. As the infection and ulcer had damaged his eye structure leaving no support to put Intra Ocular Lens (IOL), we fixed the IOL through the unique technique Glued IOL treatment invented by Hospital Chairman Prof Amar Agarwal,” she added.
