Elderly woman mauled to death by stray dog in Odisha's Balasore district

Though neighbours and some of the family members reached at the spot listening to the screams of the woman, she could not be saved.

BALASORE: An elderly woman was mauled to death by a stray dog in Bhogarai area of Balasore district on Thursday.

The incident occurred when the woman identified as Basanti Sahu (65) of Jayanarayanpur village under Bhogarai police limits was sitting outside her house.

Villagers said, the dog suddenly came and attacked the woman injuring her critically. Other family members were absent then as they had gone to a nearby temple to offer puja as part of the five-day Panchuka rituals.

Though neighbours and some of the family members reached at the spot listening to the screams of the woman, she could not be saved. The infuriated people then beat the dog to death.

Informed police rushed to the spot and seized the body. Later the body was sent to Bhogarai hospital for postmortem after the police registered a case.

Villagers said some stray dogs and monkeys have been creating havoc in the locality since long. They are forced to carry a stick for their safety whenever they go out. They demanded the local administration to intervene to stop monkey and stray dog menace.

Tehsildar Himanshu Giri assured that a team will be sent to the village to inquiry into the matter.
