2 teenage boys drown in pond in Berhampur

Biswajit Panda (16) and Abhijit Mandi (17) slipped into a pond while playing at Ankuli Nuabandh under Baidyanathpur police limits; they were rescued but later declared dead at MKCG Medical College.

BERHAMPUR: Two teenagers died after accidentally drowning in a pond at Ankuli Nuabandh under Baidyanathpur police limits in Berhampur on Sunday.

The deceased were identified as Biswajit Panda (16) from Gajapati Nagar and Abhijit Mandi (17) from Khodasingh.

Sources said the boys had gone to the local pond to play when they reportedly slipped and drowned. Locals present nearby rushed to the spot to rescue them but failed in their attempt.

On being informed, fire services personnel reached the spot and rescued the teenagers. The duo was rushed to MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, where doctors declared them brought dead. The bodies were sent for postmortem. Police have launched a probe into the incident.
