CUTTACK: A day after a patient undergoing treatment at the mental health institute of SCB Medical College and Hospital was allegedly beaten to death, police on Thursday detained three outsourced staff of the facility in this connection.

Police sources said those detained include two security personnel and an attendant. They are being questioned in connection with the case. “The CCTV footages have been obtained and are being examined, while postmortem and histopathology reports of the deceased are awaited to ascertain the exact cause of the death,” said a senior police officer adding, necessary action will be taken after that.

The deceased, 40-year-old Srikant Das of Jajpur Road, was admitted to the SCB mental health institute on Monday. He, however, died in the wee hours of Wednesday. His family alleged Das was beaten to death by the security personnel and attendants for attempting to escape the facility on Tuesday night.

Meanwhile, expressing serious concern over the incident, the BJD demanded that Health and Family Welfare minister Mukesh Mahaling should issue a clarification in this regard.
