COIMBATORE: The residents of two-third grade municipalities - Kurichi and Kuniamuthur and the town panchayat Kinathukadavu have started receiving water from Kurichi-Kuniamuthur-Kinathukadavu combined water scheme.
The trial run of the scheme was conducted in three places separately. Though quantity of water the residents get from the new scheme is less now, it will be increased in the days to come. The scheme, which was expected to be completed before the last financial year, was completed this fiscal.
According to sources, the trial run of the scheme from treatment plant at Athu Pollachi to Kinathukadavu was successfully conducted by second week of March and subsequently at Kurichi and Kuniamthur. The residents are getting supply for the past several days.
The scheme caters to the water needs of 1.50 lakh combined population of three civic bodies. While Kuniamuthur and Kurichi will be supplied 40 lakh litres and 48 lakh litres per day, Kinathukadavu will get 32 lakh litres. According to the scheme plan, 90 litres of water would be supplied per head daily in Kurichi and Kuniamuthur municipalities and 70 litres would be distributed per head in Kinathukadavu town panchayat.
The project was executed at a cost of around Rs 50 crore taking into account the projected population in 30 years from now. Pipelines have been laid along the 60 km stretch to bring water from Aliyar near Athu Pollachi.
Pumping stations and over head tanks have been constructed separately in the three civic bodies. The World Bank and the state government had funded the scheme.
