CHENNAI: A Salem based advocate has moved the Madras High Court with a writ petition alleging that former Union minister and TNCC president K V Thangkabalu has accumulated wealth, disproportionate to his known sources of income.

The petitioner has asked the Deputy Director of the Anti-Corruption Wing of the CBI to register a case, based on his complaint dated March 6, 2009 and to take up investigation on the issue.

In his petition, V K Palanivelu of Vengampatty village in Salem district, has alleged that Thangkabalu had accumulated wealth worth over Rs 13.80 lakh (under-estimated in value) in his name and the names of his close relatives and trusts during 1985- 1993 when he was a central minister and an elected member of Parliament.

The trusts were running educational institutions.

Thangkabalu and his family members were also involved in some commercial activities including King Granites Private Limited.

He had lodged a complaint with the CBI on March 6. As there was no action, he moved the HC with the present writ petition for a direction to the CBI to register a a case. Justice K Suguna, before whom the petition came up for hearing on Saturday, permitted private notice returnable by April 24.
