PUDUCHERRY: At least 50 semi-prepared country-made bombs were seized from three persons at Lawspet during a routine police check on Monday. The arrested were travelling on a two-wheeler on the East Coast Road when the police intercepted them.
According to Superintendent of Police N T Sivadasan, one of the arrested, Amuldass (29) of Govindsalai, is an accused in five cases, including an attempt to murder case. The two others are Vicky alias Vignesh (19) of Orleanpet and Gothandapani (30) of Bommiarpalayam in Tamil Nadu.
Police said that Amuldass procured the bombs from Keezhputhupet near Marakkanam from Rajendiran, a licenced trader in explosives, as per the directions from his brother-in-law Anbu. Anbu is presently serving a life sentence in the central prison.
On interrogation, Amuldass said that Karuna, a friend of Anbu and also serving a life sentence in the central prison in the Mudaliarpet bomb blast case, wanted the bombs for settling scores with those who murdered his brother-in-laws.
Anbu called Amuldass over phone and asked him to call another number after reaching Attupatty Junction on Sunday. Following the call, a man handed over Rs 1,000 and a motorcycle to Amuldass to do the ‘job’. He, along with his accomplice Vignesh and Gothandapani, went to Keezhputhupet. They purchased the explosive materials and stayed in the house of Gothandapani that day. Police arrested them in the morning when they were going to hand over the explosives to the person who gave them the money the other day.
According to police, the explosive materials in crude state were to be converted into Improvised Explosive Devices, after adding stones, nails, glass pieces, fuse and other materials. The involvement of history-sheeters and the quantity of the seized explosives have raised suspicions of the bombs being used to disrupt election process. Efforts are on to find how the call was made from the prison and whether it was a call from cell phone or coin box. Police are also investigating the links of the history-sheeter in the incident.
However, after preliminary investigations, the police found that Karuna and Anbu wanted to use the bomb to settle scores with Santhamoorthy of Anitha Nagar, who is allegedly involved in the murder of Karuna’s brother-in-laws Pandian and Parasuraman.
