CHENNAI: D K Pattammal, who broke the glass-ceiling to enter into the male-dominated world of carnatic music and enthralled classical music lovers with her captivating voice for over six decades, died on Thursday after prolonged illness. Pattammal, 90, died of old age ailments at her residence, family sources said. She is survived by two sons. Fondly known as Patta, she strode like a colossus into the carnatic music scene along with her contemporaries late M S Subbulakshmi and M L Vasanthakumari. The trio came to be known as the carnatic “female trinity”. Her rendition of some of the best  keerthanas of saint composer Muthuswamy Dikshithar as well as patriotic and revolutionary songs of national poet Subramanya Bharathi was considered unparalleled.
